Phil Baines, 1958–2024
It is with sadness that we are announcing the death of Neotist, friend and iconic graphic designer. Phil Baines sadly passed away just over a week ago after a long-battle with Ataxia and recently with a diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). He is survived by his wife, Jackie Baines, and their daughters Beth and Felicity.
Phil had an amazing career — for 32 years he taught at Central Saint Martins (CSM) in London helping to shape generations of young designers and inspire typographers all around the world. Alongside his educational career Phil wrote and designed books, wrote for magazines and journals, created signage, wayfinding and exhibitions and was responsible for curating CSM’s Central Lettering Record, a rich archive of typographic history held at the Central Saint Martins Museum.
Since his death there has been some lovely articles written about his life and work, here’s just a few.
